This manual provides a practical guide on how graduate students can work in statistical and Data Science consulting and offers valuable resources for anyone interested in creating, expanding, or maintaining statistical or Data Science consulting programs in higher education across multiple disciplines.
As we all know from experience, it can be overwhelming to build or redesign programs. Our goal is to give you a guide to help you do that work. You can use this manual as a just-in-time support to answer important questions at your own program. You could also use it to help you build a new program that will become well-established and high-quality and, most importantly, meet the needs of your institution.
Please read and use what is relevant to you! There is some light duplication between chapters and appropriate cross-referencing, but establishing and running a program like this requires continual reassessment and adjustment. We also know that each institution is unique, and each program will be different. However, there are some commonalities, and we hope this manual gives you things to consider and apply to your own context.
We suggest determining the skills that you need to staff your program successfully as an early planning consideration. After identifying those skills, it is important to identify programs with students who have those skills. Look widely, and think carefully about the specific goals and objectives for your program. For example, if Python coding knowledge is a requisite skill for a graduate student staff member, students could come from disciplines such as Computer Science, mathematics, statistics, Data Science, engineering, business analytics, mathematics education, or digital humanities. This step requires taking a broad perspective. This can be challenging if you are coming from within one academic program. However, the most appropriate choices in background for graduate student staff is not always your own department. It depends on the services or programming you plan to offer. Intensive one-on-one help may require a different student background than a help desk with shorter consultations.
