The welfare system in the United States underwent profound changes as a result of the groundbreaking welfare legislation passed in 1996 entitled The Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunities Reconciliation Act (PRWORA). "The Political Economy of Welfare Reform in the United States" examines in detail the legislative process that gave rise to PRWORA and presents two alternative theories to explain this process; the traditional public interest model of government and the public choice model. On the basis of a detailed historical analysis of welfare programs and policies in the US, the author explains the two alternative theories and engages in a detailed institutional and statistical analysis to make a convincing argument for the validity of the public choice paradigm.

Identifies town site locations and clarifies entries from the earliest documents and maps of explorers in Alabama. This encyclopedic work is a listing of 398 ancient towns recorded within the present boundaries of the state of Alabama, containing basic information on each village's ethnic affiliation, time period, geographic location, descriptions, and (if any) movements. While publications dating back to 1901 have attempted to compile such a listing, none until now has so exhaustively harvested the 214 historic maps drawn between 1544, when Hernando de Soto's entourage first came through the southeastern territory, and 1846, when Indian removal to the Oklahoma Territory was complete.

Through a comparative study of immigration attitudes in the Russian Far East, the EU, and the United States, this book demonstrates that concerns about national identity and economic interests associated with migration are ignited by a unique perception of the security dilemma. Regression analysis and case studies trace support for expulsion of migrants to the need for self-defense within an environment of uncertainty. Highlighting migration as an national security problem is therefore logical, but counterproductive, and this book recommends instead the management of migration through economic incentives at the global, national, and local level.
