Книга — лучшее, что написано Сергеем Аркадьевичем Андреевским (1847–1918), известным адвокатом, поэтом, критиком, мемуаристом. Исповедальный характер его творчества, оставившего яркий след в истории переходной эпохи рубежа XIX–XX вв., более всего запечатлелся в его итоговом произведении — мемуарной "Книге о смерти" (издана за границей в 1922 г.), включающем автобиографию, исторические фрагменты, литературные портреты исторических и частных лиц, размышления о жизни и религии, записки и афоризмы.
