Вторая мировая война, порожденная противоречиями монополистического капитализма, была подготовлена силами международной империалистической реакции. Накануне и в первые годы войны (1936—1941) сформировались две противостоявшие друг другу коалиции — германо-японо-итальянская и англо-американо-французская; каждая намеревалась вытеснить своих конкурентов с мирового рынка, добиться мирового господства и получения монопольно высоких прибылей. Войну на Западе развязала гитлеровская Германия, а на Дальнем Востоке — империалистическая Япония.
В годы подготовки и в ходе минувшей войны наиболее отчетливо проявился хищнический характер японского милитаризма: стремление его правящих кругов поработить огромный Китай, захватить тихоокеанские владения главных империалистических соперников и конкурентов — США и Англии — и в особенности осуществить агрессивную войну против СССР с целью захвата его дальневосточных территорий. Японские монополисты пытались насильственным путем переделить колонии и зоны влияния, чтобы установить свое безраздельное господство в так называемой «восточно-азиатской сфере». Они стремились установить там свой «новый порядок» и в конечном счете добиться коренного изменения соотношения сил на Дальнем Востоке и на Тихом океане в своих интересах.
