Автор, опираясь на тексты его знаменитых диалогов, на его «Историю Пелопонесской войны», впервые попытался показать, что Фукидид является выдающимся философом истории.
Свою задачу Фукидид видел в отыскании истины, он выдвинул идею об известной повторяемости исторических событий, обусловленных неизменностью определенных параметров человеческой природы. Последней свойственно стремление к преобладанию, жажда власти, алчность и честолюбие. Жажда свободы — чувство не менее сильное, чем стремление к господству. Они порождают войны, в том числе гражданские.
