Обязанность автора такой книги, в заглавии которой не может быть точно обозначен ее характер, заключается в том, чтобы указать на него в первых же строках предисловия. Модернизм и музыка не дает технического разбора главных произведений современности, не дает очерка деятельности крупнейших музыкантов наших дней, отнюдь не является справочной книгой. С другой стороны "Модернизм и музыка" не притязает и на значение систематически разработанной идеологии ан?и-модернизма. Эта книга есть именно сборник статей, в различное время и по различным поводам, не всегда даже специально музыкальным, написанных и потому если и связанных между собою, то не началом планомерного соподчинения, а единством идей и настроения, о чем впрочем не автору самому судить... Часто ударение падает больше на модернизм, нежели на музыку, которая вовлечена в ход мыслей, как искусство, наиболее близкое автору.
