Учебный планер Антонов А-1 Планер А-1 (У-с4, т.е. учебный, серии 4) являлся распространенным учебным планером. Помимо первоначального обучения, планер использовался для парения над склонами в потоках обтекания. Прототипом А-1 был планер «Стандарт-2» созданный О.К .Антоновым в 1930 году. Планер А-1 является родоначальником ряда пилотажных планеров различного назначения. Парители П-с1 и П-с2 («Упар»), пилотажно-буксировочные планеры Б-с4 и Б-с5, двухместные учебные планера У-с5, У-с6 и А-2 сохранили все характерные черты конструкции планера А-1, вплоть до одинаковых узлов и деталей. Планер А-1 представляет собой четырехподкосный моноплан с высокорасположенным крылом. Фюзеляж заменен плоской центральной фермой и хвостовой балкой, несущей хвостовое оперение. Балка соединена шарнирно с центральной фермой и вместе с килем расчалена к крылу четырьмя проволочными расчалками. Особенностью конструкции планера А-1 является возможность складывания хвоста вбок, вдоль размаха крыла, без нарушения при этом регулировки тросов управления рулями. Складной хвост облегчает эксплуатацию планера, упрощает его заводку в ангар, облегчает перевозку и уменьшает необходимое для хранения место. Второй особенностью планера А-1 является съемный обтекатель пилотского места. Планер взлетал и садился с использованием лыжи на нижней части фюзеляжа, но так же могло использоваться и деревянное колесное шасси. Колеса диаметром 300 мм изготавливались обычно из дерева с фанерными дисками. Обод колеса оковывался листовой сталью или оклеивался кожей. Большой опыт эксплуатации планера А-1 показал, что по своим летным и эксплуатационным данным он отвечал своему назначению учебной машины.
