Each of the projects in this collection of data files provides a 'building block' which constructors can use to experiment with components and use as a starting point for further development. This book will thus provide a toolkit for building audio systems and circuits based on readily available components using straightforward techniques.

Each project is based around an integrated circuit device, selected for publication because of its special features, because it is unusual, because it electronically clever, or simply because we think readers will be interested in it. Some of the devices used are fairly specific in function — in other words, the integrated circuit is designed and built for one purpose alone. Power amplifier integrated circuits are good examples. Others, on the other hand, are not specific at all, and can be used in any number of applications. Bucket brigade delay lines, say, can be used in all sorts of audio projects. Naturally, the circuit or circuits associated with each integrated circuit device reflect this.

While all circuits given with all integrated circuits here are intended for experimental use only — they are not full projects by any means — a printed circuit board track and layout are detailed. To help readers, the printed circuit boards (and kits of parts for some of the projects, too) are available from Maplin, but — as these circuits are for experimental use only — all constructional details and any consequent fault finding is left upto readers.
