The term “ham” has been in existence for more than a century. The term has been deployed by individuals or corporate bodies who, for one reason or another, enjoy being on air for recreational, educational or other technical reasons. A ham operator, also addressed as amateur radio operator, can build or personalize his own radio station after obtaining such license from relevant bodies. The ham operator essentially uses equipment from a ham radio station to initiate a two way communication with other ham operators, or even individuals within the community. The ham radio station will be able to operate on specific frequencies which have been assigned to the station by relevant communication agencies – such as the Federal Communication Commission (domiciled in the United States) and the International communication union (found in all countries of the world). Ham radio operators can create and use many types of radio stations, ranging from permanent ground stations, field stations (temporary), space stations and stations set up on mobile.
There have been some improvements in the ham radio today – compared to how it was some decades ago – with ham radios now using the Amateur radio satellite. With the Amateur radio satellite, radio operators can now use their hand-held radio to communicate over the amateur radio satellite.
