Many of the electronic devices that are being designed nowadays are not expected to be powered constantly from the power grid. Wearables, remote controls, mobile phones, tablets, toys, cameras, etc. are supposed to have some type of energy supply that does not need a cord, at least during operation time. Devising such devices doesn’t have to be especially difficult, but several facts need to be taken into consideration to obtain a quality product. This book is intended to highlight the common problems that engineers face when creating such systems, explore alternative technologies, and present the tools to choose among them.
This writing is addressed to electronic products developers that face the challenge of designing a handheld device for the first time. Experienced hardware designers may also profit from it, as they might learn new practices or review their knowledge on the subject.
The book is structured into 4 parts. In the first part, the general aspects of a handheld device are examined, as these will be the main drivers of the development process. The second part discusses the functionality that the device shall have, like operation modes, and input and output interfaces. The third part is dedicated to energy management, as the importance of this point in the conception of a handheld device cannot be stressed enough. The final part shows a reference design in which all of the requirements and best practices are applied on a real life device.
Topics other than the hardware of the device are not going to be discussed here. Ergonomics, layout of man-machine interface, and cyber security are other major aspects that also need to be addressed when drafting a handheld device, but they are outside the scope of the present document.
