Since its creation at the beginning of World War II, radars have forever transformed the practice of modern warfare. The evolution of countermeasure conducted by electronic warfare systems against radars and radars’ corresponding counter countermeasures is an intriguing technical subject. This book provides a very accessible introduction to a broad range of radar and electronic warfare technologies. The subjects covered in this book range from early radar development to later technologies such as stealthy techniques, low probability of intercept radar, and machine learning.
Historical events are used to illustrate the principles of electronic warfare and to help readers to apprehend contexts under which radars and corresponding electronic warfare techniques were developed.
This book is divided into 11 chapters. The first chapter covers the early stages of warfare over the radio spectrum not involving radar. It can be considered the precursor of electronic warfare. The fundamental concepts of radar and some history about its early development are presented in Chapter 2. An overview of electronic warfare and an introduction to an EW system are provided in Chapters 3 and 4, respectively. Mr. Joseph Caschera, a retired US Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) engineer, provided valuable information for sections on EW processors in Chapter 4. Chapter 5 is dedicated to the countermeasures and counter-countermeasures taken by EW systems and radars. The main purpose of an EW system covered in this book is to prevent an aircraft being locked by hostile radars that guide missiles.
Chapter 6 focuses on the detection of and defense against missiles after they are launched. Chaff, flare, and decoys can be considered as passive EW countermeasures as they do not emit jamming signals. They are introduced in Chapter 7. An EW system is designed to conduct countermeasures for disturbing radar operation. If an aircraft is invisible to radars then there is no need for such countermeasures as, in this scenario, radars present no threat, and stealth aircraft covered in Chapter 8 were developed for this purpose. Similarly, a low probability of intercept (LPI) radar was conceived to evade being detected by EW systems; thus, its operation will not be interrupted. Chapter 9 focuses on LPI radars. Machine learning has become a tool that people from every tech or non-tech field would like to play with, and Chapter 10 outlines some applications of machine learning in the field of EW. Chapter 11 concludes this book.
