This textbook covers all related communication technologies of underwater wireless communication, such as acoustic communication, optical communication, and magneto-inductive communication. After describing each technology, the authors relay their pros and cons, as it is essential to learn the underlying mechanism, advancements, and limitations of these techniques. Therefore, this book provides basics fundamentals of the three technologies, their advantages and disadvantages, and their applications. The authors also introduce research trends, pointing readers in the direction of research in the field of underwater wireless communication. The book is an essential textbook for undergraduate and graduate students in the field of underwater communications. The book is also useful as a reference to undergraduate engineering students, science students, and practicing engineers. The book includes end-of-chapter questions and numerical problems.
Underwater Communication is an important field of study to build the capacity of exploring the 70% part of the earth. Conventional underwater communication is achieved with the help of acoustic waves and is known as underwater acoustic communication. Because of the physical behavior and complexity of underwater channels, research in underwater acoustic communication is far behind the research in terrestrial communication. Researchers have, therefore, proposed the use of new technologies such as optical communication and magneto-inductive communication to boost the research for underwater applications. To teach about underwater communication, it is thus important to realize the students’ detailed understanding and the potential of all these technologies. Despite the fact that there are tons of underwater applications, there are very few universities that offer underwater communication studies. The few universities that do offer courses on underwater communication mainly focus on the details of underwater acoustic communication only, and there is a lack of a single book that offers students with knowledge of all the basic technologies used in underwater communication. This book serves this much-desired purpose and presents a detailed review of all the three main technologies used in underwater communication. I firmly believe that this book can replace the introductory courses already offered in lieu of underwater communication.
This book is written on three different levels. First, it may be read by people with limited mathematics and engineering background. The simplistic approach adopted in this book is adopted to keep such an audience in mind. Some of the specific terminologies may be hard to understand at first, but going through the text in general and the figures, the reader will find it easy to follow the book content. Another important feature of this book is that the three parts are written independently to each other, and a reader can easily choose to read any part without the knowledge of other parts.
The second group of audience of this book are students and teachers with basic communication backgrounds. Students with terrestrial and underwater backgrounds will find this book easy to follow and read. Keeping this vast audience, the book is written with basic communication terminologies only. Parts of the book that required specific underwater communication knowledge have been explained in detail, so that readers can relate to their field of studies.
The third group of the audience are professionals from both academia and industry involved in underwater communication. We, however, do not expect all the experts to agree with the content presented in this book. However, we do hope that the content and information presented in this book will give a deep insight into the fundamentals of underwater communication.
- Combines underwater wireless communication technologies such as acoustic communication, optical communication, and magneto-inductive wireless communication;
- Covers topics in a manner that a reader with little to no knowledge of the field can understand its primary underlying mechanisms;
- Includes end-of-chapter questions and numerical problems.
