This book investigates the control and optimization of grid-tied power converters, with a special attention attached to pulse width modulation, which determines the size and cost of power converters as well as switching harmonics. Through the methods introduced in this book, multiple grid-tied power converters safely operate and coordinate in a highly efficient and reliable fashion, thereby boosting the operation of modern power grids. To facilitate understanding, the key methods are presented together with their associated algorithms and detailed software codes. In parallel to theoretical treatments, this book further applies the methods into practical scenarios and industrial products, thus enhancing their credibility. The book serves as a guidance for electrical engineers and researchers in the field of power electronics and power systems.

To paraphrase the renowned power electronic engineer, William E. Newell, power electronics is a technology, which is interstitial to all three of the major disciplines of electrical engineering: electronics, power, and control. Therefore, a deep insight into power electronics requires solid knowledge in all these three disciplines in order to invent new ideas. Fortunately, this book advances the power electronic technology with a perfect balance of the three disciplines. It opens also up a promising new area of power electronics for multiple converters in grid-related applications.

The large-scale deployment of renewable energies and electric vehicles reshapes conventional power systems into more-electronics power systems, where multiple grid-tied power converters operating in parallel, collectively contribute to active and reactive power conversion and management. However, such grid-tied power converters are normally running independently and designed individually, without a careful consideration of the coordination and optimization along with their partners, thereby leading to huge increments in system cost, size, volume, switching harmonics, and circulating currents.

This book concentrates on the coordinated control, modulation, and optimization of multiple grid-tied power converters. It proposes the concept of real-time harmonic and circulating current suppression through the coordinated PWM operation of DC-AC and AC-DC power converters as well as pioneers relevant research and physical implementations. On top of that, the book revolutionizes the design methodology of grid-tied power converters with the consideration of PWM coordination, thereby allowing a dramatic decrease in the filter size or a remarkable increase of system efficiency-and thereby in the end reduce cost.
