Electronic Music from Scratch is a complete crash course in the joys of musical circuitry. Taking inspiration from famous instruments in electronic music history, this guide shows readers how to create dozens of whimsical, unexpected, and incredibly usable musical instruments. Create oscillators that compose their own melodies based on candle flickers, cassette players with keyboard attachments, a talkbox for scaring younger relatives, and so, so much more. Written with total beginners in mind, Electronic Music from Scratch will take readers on a journey through music history and lead them to discover sounds they didn't even know existed.

The first section of this book is dedicated to understanding what electronic music is culturally and how it works scientifically. And though you don’t really have to know what you’re doing to make your way through this book, we think it’s handy to understand the simple background of the social and scientific legacy you’re now a part of. What are you going to make? And how are you going to use it?

Part II of this book is all about getting your feet wet with some basic electronic prototypes. We’ll learn what electronic components do, how to use them in a simple musical setting, and some simple variations. We’ll show you how to build a light-sensitive theremin, a talkbox so you can sound like a robot, a pocket-sized amplifier, a working plate reverb, an electronic cricket, and oh, so much more. Along the way, we’ll explain the processes of prototyping, soldering, building enclosures, and reading schematics—all necessary steps on the way to building the electronic instrument of your dreams.

The projects that follow in Part III are our favorites—as musically adventurous as they are scientifically intriguing. We hope your imagination runs wild.

Congratulations, you brilliant engineer you. You’ve made it to the final section (Part IV)! Now what? The greatest part about breadboarding circuits is that it’s easy to integrate them into one another. In fact, pretty much all the projects in this book can work alongside one another seamlessly. When we teach workshops, we encourage people to pick their favorite generators, modifiers, and outputs and combine them into an exciting chimera of an instrument. For instance, you could put a square wave into a filter and out of a talkbox. Or you could make a suite of speakers that plays the 4017 wavetable circuit. The possibilities are endless! Of course, we weren’t really satisfied leaving the book at a choose-your-own-adventure conclusion. So for those who would really like a challenge, we’ve cooked up something especially for you.
