This book is about Marty and Jim's respective journeys toward what they call "Management Nirvana." Simply explained, but very difficult to attain, Management Nirvana happens when a leader builds a team of independent professionals who are aligned with the organization's mission and vision, and who get things done without requiring hand-holding.
An organization needs a process. Goal-setting comes out of the process. Upon a company’s inception, they must establish their VMOSA: Vision, Mission, Objectives, Strategy, Action Plan. You must start with vision and mission statements. Next, you need to set objectives around your mission. Then you need to create a strategy to implement those objectives. After that, you need an action plan that outlines the things you’re going to do by a certain date, list who owns the deliverables, and how you’re going to monitor the process. This is an over-simplification, but essentially, that’s the road map an organization requires to be able to confidently tell the world, “Here’s what we can accomplish. Here’s our vision. Here’s our mission. Here are our objectives.” The strategy is how we’re going to accomplish the objectives, and the action plan is the specific tactical things we’ll do. Implement that, and you have as good of a road map as Google Maps.
