Portfolio management is becoming the 'must have' for organizations to prosper and survive in this decade and beyond. No longer can the organizational focus be one of following best and repeatable practices as resource limitations mean only those programs, projects, and operational work that add business value can and should be pursued. Executives are focusing on strategic ability and managing complexity, which can only be done through a disciplined portfolio process in ensuring the best mix of programs, projects, and operational work is under way. In turn, the portfolio is constantly in flux as difficult decisions are made if a project, for example, is no longer contributing to business value and providing benefits and should be terminated to reallocate resources to one of higher priority. Commitment to this difficult approach is necessary at all levels, and communication is required so everyone knows how their work contributes to the organization's strategic goals and objectives.

Highlights of the book include the following:

• Project portfolio management for product development. A review is given on the development of new products in the context of a portfolio delivering on organization strategy.

• Developing a new portfolio. The necessary role of change manageent in creating a new portfolio is examined.

• Portfolio governance. Chapter 4 explores the six key questions that the organization needs to answer to develop a pragmatic, sensible, and effective GM. Chapter 5 reviews the structure and functions of portfolio management.

• Marketing a portfolio. How to win the support of the various stakeholders is a discussion on marketing the portfolio benefits and persuading stakeholders that the commitment they are going to make, a price they pay, is worth the benefit to them.

• Portfolio management success. Understanding and analyzing how the success of a portfolio is managed is important to understanding what portfolio management entails, which the chapter reviews.

• Portfolio communications management. One chapter on this topic reviews many aspects of communications management in a portfolio setting and explains how communication should be implemented around strategic portfolio management in order to maximize its impact and relevance throughout the organization. A second reviews the roles of the governance board, portfolio manager, and related stakeholders in portfolio communications management.

• Managing a portfolio in an uncertain environment. The zone of uncertainty is presented as well as potential remedies for disruption and disappointment that occurs in the zone. These remedies are principally related to improving relationships among stakeholders.

• Agile portfolios. Insight is given on how organizations can ensure that agile initiatives align to the organizational strategy.

• Dynamic capabilities in portfolio management. Portfolio management challenges are created in dynamic environments, and dynamic capabilities aid portfolio managers in identifying and managing these challenges. Examples illustrate aspects of portfolio management that help organizations respond to change and improve organizational outcomes.
