Milton AVERY belongs to that rare and gifted company of artists whose vision of humanity and art is large enough to transform the ordinary events of life into a universal visual poetry. Avery was not an innovator; for him it was of greater importance that the eye and hand be able to capture the essence of a scene through paintings and prints.
He chose to hold, in time and space, the immediate retinal image of mountains and sea, and of figures at work or leisure within such landscapes. His wife, his daughter and his friends made up the repertory of images to which he gave a subtle geniality and casual humor. A perceptive eye and integrity of vision served him well. His skilled hand set down - in countless paintings, drawings, watercolors, some 200 monotypes and 48 prints — a gay, sometimes nostalgic chronicle of his experiences.
