This is the first comprehensive, fully documented, and fully illustrated study of French cathedral sculpture during the period 1140-1270.
In planning the present volume, the first consideration was to reduce the available material to reasonable proportions. It was decided that although the influence of French sculpture spread to neighbouring parts of Europe - triumphant proof of its pioneering role - works outside the boundaries of present-day France must be excluded.
The next step was to fix a chronological limit, which in the nature of the case was bound to be somewhat arbitrary. The year of the death of St Louis was chosen, as roughly defining the period by which French cathedral sculpture had passed its peak; with one or two exceptions none of the monuments illustrated is, to the best of our belief, later than 1270. At the same time we were concerned to present, so far as possible, a broad and comprehensive picture of the development of gothic sculpture in the big masons' yards, from Saint-Denis shortly before 1140 until the third quarter of the thirteenth century. We have therefore been at pains to include, along with the well-known and much photographed monuments, some that are less accessible and in a few instances virtually neglected, even today. This decision was all the easier to adhere to because the artistic level of sculpture during this gothic heyday was almost uniformly high, with the result that the beauty of the works illustrated has rarely been in question. We hope we have succeeded in presenting a picture of cathedral sculpture between 1140 and 1270 which if not formally complete is at least full and comprehensive.
