The original version of this book, published in 1991, was intended to make concrete
our idea that discrete mathematics could and should be a year course in undergraduate
mathematics and be a coequal of calculus in the first two years of the
undergraduate curriculum. However, now as then, few students take a full year of discrete math during the
first two undergraduate years. Therefore, this new edition of our book focuses on
a one-semester discrete mathematics course.
Almost no one disputes any longer that discrete math is important and that it
has a place in a well-rounded mathematics or computer science program. Moreover,
more and more is showing up in the school curriculum. Also, physical and social
scientists urge their students to learn some. Thus, many students from a variety of
disciplines know about discrete math and now study it somewhere, or should.
