The codex Bamberg Hist. 3, henceforth abbreviated as B, is a most fascinating document which throws light on many aspects of medieval historiography. It is a huge volumen originating from Halberstadt, produced around the year 1000, containing historiography from Late Antiquity up to the 10th century: the Epitome de Caesaribus (ca. 400), the Exciditim Troie (6th century), Jordanes’ Romana and Getica (6th century), the Liber Historiae Francorum (ca. 730), Bede’s Ecclesiastica Historia gentis Anglorum and Chronica de sex aelalibus mundi (ca. 730), Paul the Deacon’s Historia Romana and Historia Langobardorum (late 8th century) and various texts on Alexander the Great, the latest from around the year 950 (Leo Archipresbyter). Not only is this combination of texts remarkable per se, what makes the codex even more interesting is that most of its texts appear to have been paraphrased and rewritten in a peculiar Latin marked by vernacularisms.
The purpose of the present book is to offer a series of con-textualisations of B, with special regard to its paraphrased version of the Historic.
