Myths regulate our relationship with various modes of knowledge, or with knowledge in general: if they are sexually specific, as the figure of the bluestocking clearly is, then they should be challenged. Conversely, anything that has the status of knowledge can turn out to be riddled with mere beliefs, myths, or shocking misrepresentations. Therefore, to aim at sexual equality in (sometimes pseudo-) knowledge- acquisition is apparently to aim at generating equal credulity in the face of absurdities that defy description. Would it not be wiser and more efficient to prefer a critical epistemology capable of establishing that some things are not worth learning in what generally passes for knowledge?
This book is the product of perplexity at what author have read and seen of the small incidents of ordinary life at the end of the twentieth century, as well as her astonishment at the unusual resilience of what is a false problem, insoluble precisely because it is false.
