This challenging, stimulating, scholarly work is the first systematic, single-authored survey of the social and economic history of the Islamic Near East to ca. 1517. The geographical areas investigated include Egypt the more eastern Arab lands, and Persia. As with all of Professor Ashtor’s contributions, the work is rich in economic detail with the appropriate European and Near Eastern medieval sources cited. In a number of cases relatively neglected rebellions reflecting social and economic opposition to an established regime are detailed. The primary thrust of the work is that of an extensive interpretative essay, and the following summarize some of the major arguments presented by the author.
