The basic incompatability of Soviet communism and nationalism and the attempt on the part of Conmrunists to utilize various national movements have led to a growing interest in the interaction of both phenomena. If the nature and significance of this conflict are to be understood, it is necessary to study thoroughly the appeal which communism has made by associating itself with national aspirations as well as with a common search for a more equitable social order. An event such as the Soviet-Yugoslav dispute of 1948 undoubtedly made observers more aware of the sources of the conflict between genuine national interests and Soviet communism, but the dispute itself i when viewed in perspective, was more in the nature of a final confirmation than an initial surmise of such a conflict.
