In this work more than most others from my pen I am touching on economic and social issues the theoretical aspects of which still excite controversy. My picture may be judged by some to be unconventional or heterodox; let me stress, accordingly, that I am seeking to understand the development of early Greece, not to draw lessons for the modern world or to buttress doctrines which are widely held today.
