Allouche's work is a compact study with regard to the relations between the Ottomans and the Safavids. Accordingly, the author investigates the state of affairs between the two until 1550, which the Safavid establishment and development as a religio-political power had brought about. Having said that, supposing the book is divided into two main chapters, namely "from the time of the eponymous founder of the dynasty, Safiyüddin till the Şah İsmail's reign", "a proportion of Şah Tahmasb's rule", the balance between these chapters seems unequal at the expense of the latter. The first part seemed to me more elaborated, since the author spared more time buttressing his ideas concerning the Safavid strengthening under Şah İsmail's sway, while he threw only a glance at the post-İsmail period. But, even so, it offers a satisfying introductory reading for those who take an interest in the origins of Ottoman-Safavid conflict.
