"Making baby quilts has always been a source of enjoyment for me. Through the years, I've given away at least one hundred and fifty of them to friends and relatives, and I'm still making them. What fun it was when my first grandchild arrived! I made Anthony a very special quilt before his birth and, of course, after he was born, I had to make one especially for him with his name on it in a design a boy would treasure. When he turned two, he had to have a Christmas quilt in keeping with the season for cold December nights. He came to me one day, not long after his little brother had arrived, and said, "Grandma, I'm in a big bed now and I need a bigger quilt."
As more grandchildren arrived, I realized that although babies usually take nine months to arrive, grandchildren can come in batches. As a result, I'm still making quilts for all of them — and I love it. Before you know it, I'll be making quilts for high school graduation gifts! Seven grandchildren do keep me busy.
When planning quilts for kids' first big beds, I wanted to use designs that would interest a growing child, not a baby. And, I didn't want to make quilts that were scaled-down versions of typically adult designs. The quilt patterns presented here are the result of this thought process. I hope you will enjoy each one."
