The building of small flying machines actually was popular long before piloted craft were developed. Throughout the 1800s, these little planes were fashioned in Europe and the United States for scientific experimentation as well as for recreation. Technically, they were not models because they were not replicas of existing airplanes. Instead, they were unique creations, springing from the craftsman's imagination and investigation of aerodynamic principles. They were not copies, but forerunners of the real thing.
