The life of Vincent Van Gogh was short and troubled. He loved mankind and wanted to serve men through his art, but his paintings were never exhibited, and never purchased; he dreamed of an artistic association — a colony of painters with similar views, — but he was always alone; he strove for material independence, but was obliged to exist on means provided by his brother. Among all the painters of the late nineteenth century, an exceptionally complex and contradictory period in art, Van Gogh was possibly the one in whom this ambiguity, this disparity between dream and reality took the most extreme and tragic form. Those with more stable characters and better physical health, able either to give themselves up wholeheartedly to the social conflict, or to ignore the injustice that surrounded them, could survive the attacks of circumstance or disillusionment.
