Based on much recently released documentation, this book deals not only with overall policy and strategy, but also with the technicalities of ship design and weapon procurement Many hitherto unpublished warship design studies are included, emphasising as usual in Norman Friedman's books the factors determining the design, and in these cases the reasons why they were never built. Since the period under review dictated the shape of navies for decades to come, this work is a significant contribution to the understanding of contemporary naval developments. Indeed, many of the problems of the 1950s merely foreshadowed those of the present, so this study of their solutions is highly relevant for the policy planning of today.
