This book is dedicated to the medium tanks of the USSR, which took part in the Second World War. Here are their tactical and technical characteristics, and also describes the history of creating and upgrading models. This is an extended edition. It added information about the legendary Soviet tank T-34 and its modifications.
The medium tanks of the USSR are distinguished by good armament and rational reservation, increasing the chance of rebounding or non-penetration. However, the firepower had to be paid with precision, which makes it necessary to shorten the distance to the middle-near range.
The medium tanks included tanks that had a combat mass of up to 30 tons (later - 40 tons) and armed with a large-caliber cannon and machine guns. The medium tanks were intended to develop success in the breakthrough of the heavily fortified enemy defensive line.
In the first years between the wars, most of the armored forces armed their armies almost exclusively with light tanks. True, along with light small series and even single specimens, heavy armored combat vehicles were built, which were called land dreadnoughts. However, the niche between light and heavy tanks for a long time was empty. It was empty until a multi-towered T-28 medium tank appeared in the USSR.
To call the T-28 the first in the history of such an average would not be quite correct - back in 1929 in the Soviet Union appeared the average T-24 tank. However, this tank was only released in 15 copies and was used mainly as a training vehicle.
