The objective of this volume is to trace the history of military aviation In the Western Hemispheric regions commonly referred to as Central America and the Caribbean. Intentionally omitted from this book are mainland South American nations (e. g. Venezuela, Colombia and the Guyanas) and Mexico which, while arguably "Caribbean" nations, are deserving of individual, separate treatment outside the scope of this series. At the outset, the reader - whether well-read on the region or not - is enjoined to discard certain pre-judgments and pre-conceptions. Chief amongst these must undoubtedly be that such small and politically evolutionary states must be inconsequential in military aviation terms. However, the question becomes far more sobering and immediate, when recalling the events of the past forty years in Guatemala (1954), Costa Rica (1948 and 1955), Cuba (1957-59), El Salvador (on-going), Nicaragua and - most recently - Panama, all of which are within hours of mainland USA.
