The 9-Pounder cannon was the first gun of the first Canadian Permanent Batteries in 1871. Developments in breech loading guns made the 9-Pdr. RML obsolete by 1890, but as late as 1905 it was still in use in Dominion Artillery Association competitions to expend existing stocks of ammunition. It was a simple, robust guns, suited to the rough handling of a half trained but enthusiastic force in a rugged, little developed country.
