This book is devoted to self-propelled artillery guns of Great Britain, which took part in World War II. Here the main models are given and their combat characteristics and the history of creation are also described.
The emergence of self-propelled antitank artillery became a logical consequence of the evolution of the tactics of the confrontation between artillery pieces and tanks. Anti-tank self-propelled guns were able to fight more effectively with enemy tanks; they were able to support the attack of their infantry and armored vehicles, destroying enemy antitank weapons.
Self-propelled artillery guns (SPG or SPA, or SPAG, or SAU - self-propelled artillery unit, or SAM - self-propelled artillery mount) are a combat vehicle that is an artillery gun mounted on a self-propelled chassis. The SAU included wheeled and caterpillar fighting vehicles with cannon or howitzer weapons, which are not tanks or armored vehicles. The types and purposes of SAU are very diverse: they can be either armored or not armored, use a wheeled or tracked chassis, have a turret or fixed gun mount. In the literature, different names for these combat units are used, but in the case of abbreviations, we will use the abbreviation SAU or SPG.
This is an extended version of the book. It added anti-aircraft artillery and a description of the experimental cannon "Alecto".
"Self-propelled artillery and self-propelled antitank mounts were fixed the glory of the most effective weapon of tank combat. This weapon has made it possible to disable a very large number of enemy tanks." -Erich Schneider
