A cross between A Few Good Men and American Sniper, this is the true story of an elite Marine special operations unit bombed by an IED and shot at during an Afghanistan ambush. The Marine Commandos were falsely accused of gunning down innocent Afghan civilians following the ambush. The unit’s leader, Maj. Fred Galvin, was summarily relieved of duty and his unit was booted from the combat zone. They were condemned by everyone, from the Afghan president to American generals. When Fox Company returned to America, Galvin and his captain were the targets of the first Court of Inquiry in the Marines in fifty years.
One reason I wrote this book was so that every American citizen would know how U.S. - led coalition forces had won a decisive victory against terrorists in Afghanistan by 2005 and yet lost the war, ignominiously bugging out in August 2021. The frontline foot soldiers of the U.S. and coalition forces did not let us down. Rather, it was the words and inactions of senior military leaders who restrained and hamstrung tactical units, while repeatedly falsely testifying to Congress and the international press that the training of the Afghan National Army would lead to an effective exit strategy. This senior military officer mantra was reinforced with their repeated pleas to stay the course for just ten years, then twelve, then fourteen, until their “forever war” finally ended. In fact, the effort in Afghanistan lacked the ability to ever succeed in the way U.S. forces guided peace and democracy in Germany, Japan, or South Korea—and our senior military and Department of State leaders were fully aware of that. Yet they prevented the American people from knowing the on-the-ground truth.
Unfortunately, there will not be any accountability in this life for those leaders who squandered nearly twenty years, lost 2,325 service members Killed In Action, suffered 20,705 service members Wounded In Action, and spent more than one trillion dollars in Afghanistan—and only made the international terrorist threat worse. Unrestrained senior military officers unrepentantly used censure, threats of imprisonment, and professional devastation of their own forces to guide tactical units to play nice, ride out the deployment clock, and cooperate and graduate, so everyone would receive a “successful combat deployment” and end up getting promoted. All while losing a war.
