Although somewhat overshadowed by its better known contemporary-the de Havilland DH 2 (subject of DATAFILE No.48) which preceded it into service-the Royal Aircraft Factory's FE8 pusher fighter served in four Frontline RFC units in France with at least one pilot scoring eight victories on the type. Nevertheless, the FE8 was already obsolete by the time it arrived at the Front and proved to be a poor match for superior twin-gunned German Albatros fighters, suffering particularly badly at the hands of von Richthofen's elite Jasta 11. In this highly informative monograph, Jack Bruce relates the development and service history of the FE8 supported with many rare and revealing archive images. These,combined with Ian Stair's scale plans and series editor Ray Rimell's colour notes, provide a unique study of this largely unsung British warplane that enjoyed the dubious distinction of being the last pusher fighter to see combat service.

The German Halberstadt two-seaters of WWI were synonymous with speed,manoeuvrability and combat proficiency. Our 69th DATAFILE marked the third occasion on which we documented these remarkable warplanes, the subject of this volume generally considered to be one of the best short-range reconnassance aeroplanes of its day. Built by three sub-contracters, as well as by the parent company,the Halberstadt C.V was well-liked by its crews and performed its various roles efficiently,initial problems with undercarriage failures notwithstanding. For all that, the C.V has not been well served by the surviving photo record;the best of what is available being presented in this 32 page monograph by Peter M Grosz. It is therefore doubly fortunate that a single specimen survives, currently displayed at the Royal Army Museum in Brussels,many photos of which appear in this book for the benefit of modellers.

The radical,for the time, virtually all-metal construction of the AEG C.IV made it a robust and reliable reconnaissance and bombing aeroplane which was employed to great effect on the Western Front and in the far warmer climes of the Middle East theatre. Indeed, the metal constructuion was ideal for withstanding extremes of temperature, although one unforeseen drawback rendered many examples quickly unserviceable as author Peter M Grosz relates in his absorbing narrative. The Navaho program is the least known, yet the most important of the United States early missile programs. In rocket technology alone the Navaho made possible the Thor, Jupiter and Redstone missiles. It also allowed the construction of the Atlas ICBM\s engines, and in the years to come this engine technology would power the Apollo moon rocket, and our present-day Space Shuttle. The Navaho project achieved major advances in every discipline of engineering and electronics. The program also gave us the airborne digital computer, modular electronic circuitry, and the all inhertial navigation system. The development of modular circuitry alone revolutionized the electronics industry, improving the reliability and repairability of countless electronic devices. In just ten years this program accomplished several technological firsts. The X-10 test drone was the first turbojet powered vehicle to exceed Mach 2. It also was the first aircraft to fly a complete mission under inertial(computer) guidance. Later, the G-26 ramjet powered vehicle became the first jet aircraft to reach Mach 3 and an altitude of 77,000 feet. Even the Navaho booster engine would set a record by producing 405,000 lbs. of thrust-a benchmark that would last for five years. These accomplishments have escaped public notice for more than three decades dut to the program\s Top Secret classification. Forty years after its cancellation many of its documents are still classified as Secret. James Gibson\s new book explains the technical and historical aspects of the Navaho program here for the first time.
