Английский истребитель R.A.F. S.E.5 S.E.5 был лучшим английским истребителем Первой Мировой войны. Его история началась в июле 1915 года, когда во Франции в Буа-Коломе состоялись испытания первого V-образного двигателя Марка Биркигта, основателя фирмы «Испано-Сюиза». Двигатель предназначался для французского истребителя SPAD. На испытаниях присутствовал английский представитель полковник Брук-Попхем. Англичанин высоко оценил швейцарский двигатель и склонил Министерство авиации уже в августе 1915 года заказать партию двигателей «Испано-Сюиза» для английских самолетов. Предприятие «Ройял Эйркрафт Фэктори» в Фарнборо, графство Гантс, приступило к разработке самолета под швейцарский двигатель. Руководили работами Г.П. Фолленд, Дж. Кенуорти и майор Ф.У. Годден, который в то время занимал должность летчика-испытателя фирмы. Работы над самолетом S.E.5 (Scout Experimental) начались летом 1916 года, а уже 22 ноября облетали первый прототип (№ А4561). 24 декабря 1916 года Ф.У. Годден улетел на прототипе во Францию, где в Сен-Омере состоялись полевые испытания самолета. Как оказалось, самолет немного уступает в маневренности «Ньюпору», по скороподъемности примерно равен другим самолетам, но зато имеет более высокую горизонтальную скорость, а также обладает прочной конструкцией, позволяющей хорошо разгонять самолет в пикировании. Вооружение состояло из одного 7,7-мм синхронизированного пулемета «Виккерс» с боезапасом 400 патронов, располагавшегося с левой стороны фюзеляжа, и одного 7,7-мм пулемета «Льюис» на лафете Фостера, установленного на верхнем крыле
