Since ancient times, wars have inspired artists and their patrons to commemorate victories. When the United States finally entered World War I, American artists and illustrators were commissioned to paint and draw it. These artists’ commissions, however, were as captains for their patron: the U.S. Army. The eight men—William J. Aylward, Walter J. Duncan, Harvey T. Dunn, George M. Harding, Wallace Morgan, Ernest C. Peixotto, J. Andre Smith, and Harry E. Townsent—arrived in France early in 1918 with the American Expeditionary forces (AEF). Alfred Emile Cornebise presents here the first comprehensive account of the U.S. Army art program in World War I. The AEF artists saw their role as one of preserving images of the entire aspect of American involvement in a way that photography could not.

Owing to the heavy casualties suffered by the carabiniers in the 1809 campaign, the Emperor decreed that they should be armoured to the same advantage as the cuirassiers. In this way the two corps drew together in being the only troops of the Grande Arme? who were armoured, while at the same time they diverged in breaking away from their traditionally similar dress. Emir Bukhari does a splendid job of examining the uniforms and equipment of Napoleon's cuirassiers and carabiniers, in a text complemented throughout by numerous illustrations and diagrams including eight full page colour plates by the ever popular Angus McBride.

ТБ-1 имел схему свободнонесущего моноплана с крылом высокого профиля, обладал большой грузоподъемностью и сравнительно высокой скоростью, хорошей устойчивостью на всех режима полета и простой техникой пилотирования. В эксплуатации самолет ТБ-1 зарекомендовал себя простым, надежным и неприхотливым самолетом. Кроме сухопутного варианта выпускался также поплавковый вариант ТБ-1П. В СССР это был первый опыт постановки на поплавки столь крупного самолета. В 1929 году на самолете АНТ-4 "Страна Советов" экипаж летчика С.А. Шестакова совершил выдающийся перелет по маршруту Москва - Нью-Йорк общей протяженностью 21242 км. На АНТ-4 летчик А.В. Ляпидявский совершил посадку на льдину, где находился экипаж затонувшего парохода "Челюскин" и вывез на материк часть людей. Снятые с вооружения, ТБ-1 еще долго использовались в качестве транспортных самолетов. Производство ТБ-1 закончилось в 1932 году. Всего было построено 217 самолетов этого типа.
