Эта необычная книга посвящена одной из самых красивых и поэтичных легенд русского народа: о граде Китеже, спасенном Богом от врагов на дне озера и оставшемся там навечно, продолжающем жить своей жизнью и доступном восприятию лишь немногих праведников.
Интерес к местным легендам проявлен уж был Буслаевым, что стояло в связи с более общим его интересом к областным литературам вообще. Буслаев и отметил впервые несколько таких агиографических памятников, в основу которых легли местные легенды: новгородские — в житии Антония Римлянина, ростовские — в сказании о Петре, царевиче Ордынском, смоленские — в повести о Меркурии, муромские — в сказаньях о Петре и Февронии и об унженском кресте. Аналогичная роль местных легенд в образовании других литературно-поэтических жанров — летописных сказаний, былин, украинских дум — отмечалась и позже. Но именно лишь отмечалась. Специальных же об этом исследований у нас почти нет, как нет и ни одного сборника этих легенд: они спорадически лишь мелькают, — среди инородных по существу апокрифов, — в сборниках Афанасьева, Драгоманова, Садовникова; чаще же всего их можно встретить в никому неведомых провинциальных „Губернских ведомостях“ и им подобных изданиях.
