Electromagnetics refers to the study of magnetism and electricity and their inter-relation. It is a branch of physics which deals with studying electromagnetic fields produced by electrically charged objects. The applications of electromagnetic fields are used in various motors, CAT scanners, TVs, radio transmissions, magnetic resonance imaging, common speakers, etc. This book contains some path-breaking studies related to this field. It includes a detailed explanation of the various theories and applications of electromagnetism. The topics included in this text are of utmost significance and are bound to provide incredible insights to the readers. It includes contributions of experts and scientists from across the globe and thus, will serve as a reference guide to students, scientists, physicists, engineers, researchers, and all those who are interested in this subject.
The book contains a number of theorems and principles which afford the reader mathematical justification for many of the methodologies one often takes for granted. For example, when one expresses the solution of fields inside a metallic waveguide in terms of an infinite number of modes, what guarantees that the solution so constructed is sufficiently general? Hopefully the contents in this book will pave the way to bring to rest such troubling queries. Many mathematically oriented theorems are stated, but only those that are not beyond the scope of the book are proved. Our interest here is to explore the relevance of these theorems to the solution of Maxwellʼs equations and demonstrate their application in solving practical problems.
The order of material does not always transition from elementary topics to advanced topics as is typical of a textbook. For example, in chapter 1 there is already material involving spherical harmonics and Greenʼs functions. The advantage of such a loose structure is that the chapters need not be read in a sequential manner, but can be read more or less independent of each another. However, an attempt has been made to place more advanced topics at the end. I may have deliberately relegated seemingly important physical problems to the status of examples. This is done so that students do not become distracted by the intricate details of the physical problem itself, but rather focus more on the common mathematical theme for treating a similar class of problems. In that sense the book may serve the purpose of answering how to solve a physical problem rather than what the physical problemis. The book will therefore be satisfactory to students who want to learn and gain proficiency in the foundations of mathematical methods dealing with engineering electromagnetics.
