В общем случае автоматизированные библиотечно-информационные системы (АБИС) представляют собой разновидность автоматизированных информационно-поисковых систем. В вузах, ведущих обучение библиотечно-информационным специальностям, как правило, в той или иной степени изучаются информационные системы (базы данных, АИС, АБИС и т. п.).
Предлагаемая учебная дисциплина включает три основных вида обеспечения АБИС: организационно-технологическое, программное и техническое. Кроме названных видов обеспечения, существуют еще информационное, лингвистическое, правовое и эргономическое.
