We are living in the digital age. Everything we touch and do these days from ordering products & services, studying, to booking travel, digital solutions are everywhere. In a world increasingly driven by technology, understanding the creation of digital solutions is more crucial than ever.

This first book in a comprehensive three-part series on digital solutions, focuses on the essential context and modelling that precedes development and delivery. It explores their definition, categorization, usage, and the initial stages of their development, and offers practical guidance to a range of stakeholders, including business analysts, software developers, software testers, solution architects and technologists.

Development involves writing program code (also known as source code) and using a set of tools such as an integrated development environment (IDE) and continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines to translate that into executable software. Development and testing are often combined, with the developer undertaking unit testing (also known as program, component or module testing) while refining the source code, although specialist testing (such as stress testing and penetration testing) is conducted as a separate activity. In some cases, the developers will adopt a test-first approach (also known as test-driven development (TDD)) whereby the developer writes tests (which initially fail because there is no program code to execute) before writing the source code. These tests establish strong success criteria for the source code (the failing tests should start passing as the code evolves). TDD is covered in Delivering Digital Solutions.

Project management tools enable teams to effectively plan, organise and manage tasks while tracking project progress from inception to completion. These tools enhance workflows, helping teams meet deadlines, evaluate performance and achieve successful project delivery. Typical features provided by project management tools include:
• task management;
• progress and milestone tracking;
• Agile and Kanban boards;
• resource management and workload balancing;
• Gantt charts, timelines and reporting features; and
• integration with time tracking and communication tools.
Typical examples of project management tools include: Microsoft Project, Monday.com, Wrike, Jira, Trello, ClickUp, Smartsheet, Asana and Basecamp.
