This book covers various algorithms for compression and encryption, some of which overlap, serving both purposes simultaneously. We will discuss why one algorithm works better for one case and not another as well as how different implementations are superior or more robust. All of the algorithms and code are presented in the C programming language and all are available free online.
As motivation and purpose vary, so do compression and encryption algorithms. In the early days of computers, storage space was a significant concern, but that is now rarely the case. Even download/upload time-to-transmit is becoming less of an issue. Now packaging convenience and/or security is the primary impetus for compression and privacy is the chief incentive for encryption. We will discuss compression and encryption separately, though these often overlap.
There are two decisions when considering compression and/or encryption algorithms in the digital world of files and data. The first of these is lossless or lossy and the second is generic or targeted.
