What do programmers need to know that isn't about writing semicolons in a text editor? This book gives an overview based on the author's experiences in the field.

This book is about the things that go into being a programmer that aren't specifically the programming. Coder Complete, if you will. It starts fairly close to home, with chapters on working with other coders, on supporting your own programming needs, and on other "software engineering" practices that programmers should understand and make use of. We'll go through talking about psychology and metacognition — about understanding how you the programmer function and how to improve that functioning — to finally discuss what programming is, philosophically speaking, and why we do it.

Who should read it?
I’m expecting that for most programmers who look at this book, there’ll be a sudden inflection somewhere in the table of contents. You’ll be looking through the first few chapters thinking: “yes, OK, I know all this” and then suddenly that’ll change to “what the hell is this doing in a book for programmers?”

The book’s written from the perspective of someone who spent most of their career writing iOS applications. There’s good reason for that: so far I have—though I’ve had experience in other fields, too. I hope that the content—while definitely grounded in that world—is applicable to programmers in general. This is about all of those things that aren’t the code, and we all do similar non-coding things. Unless you’re a practitioner of Extreme Ironing, anyway.
