What if I told you there was a way to measure and optimize software delivery performance independent of any particular agile framework and to do so in a way that was empirically and mathematically based? That is the aim of this book. Using quantitative rigor combined with the principles of influence through transparency, we'll unpack an approach to software delivery that can dramatically improve the stability and predictability of your process.
This book represents the first draft of the structure of those ideas. There is an adage in software development that says “If you are not embarrassed by the first version of your product, you've launched too late.” It is in line with this principle that I have decided to publish this early formulation of these thoughts.
There’s got to be a better way and there is. Many years ago I remember reading about financial analysts who were leaving their jobs on Wall Street to work for themselves. What suddenly made this possible the cheap availability of cloud computing resources. These analysts were creating financial models and then testing them on short-lived instances of supercomputing scale computing power in the time it took to brew a pot of coffee. With the widespread availability of cloud services like AWS, they were not beholden to the traditional institutions and their legacy on-prem infrastructure.
In a very similar vein, an organization that adopts and employs data-driven agility opens the door to an entirely new domain of scalability. Data-driven agility makes something called command center navigation possible. The fundamental idea is that if you have your delivery process quantitatively established and monitored in real-time then one person or small group of people can observe and monitor and respond to changes in such a system in a way that traditional hierarchical approaches have no hope of addressing. The imagery here is one of a control room with key analysts monitoring system-wide data able to respond swiftly and specifically to problem areas as soon as they are observed.
