This book is not a replacement for official Microsoft documentation which (for the most part) is very good. If you want to know all the detail about the Bot Framework SDK then go to the documentation. This book is (unashamedly) not a copy/paste of existing documentation. This book will tell you when using the SDK is a good idea, and what to consider if you don’t want to. It will show you alternative tools you can use to achieve the same outcome. It does not assume you already know which tool to use; instead it aims to introduce you to the relative merits of each possible option so that you are armed with the information you need to make an educated choice. Similarly, this book will reference on-line material where it exists and is of high quality. There is no point in re-inventing the wheel. Often, the key is not knowing how to do something, but when to do it, and when not to. Hopefully, this book can help with that.
This book is divided into sections roughly reflecting the target audience of either professional developers, or those who come with no prior experience of development (and have no desire to become developers either). Use those sections to guide your journey through this book but do not feel that you are not able to explore elsewhere. For both groups of people there is lots of value to be gained from having an understanding of how things work on the other side of the fence.
In particular, professional developers should make sure they understand the capabilities of all the no-code and low-code tooling available. These tools might be better choices for your next development project and knowing that they exist and what they can do will be advantageous to you. Finally, expect that this book will update over time. The Microsoft Teams Development Platform has been, and continues to be, a fast-moving area of continual development. As new functionality is enabled different scenarios open up. This was the main reason this book is published via a platform that enables you to receive regular updates at no extra cost. It’s the only way this book can stay relevant and useful over time.
