This interactive study guide will support candidates in developing fundamental knowledge and understanding of the basics of computer and network technology, processor architecture and networks, and with an introduction to operating systems and system oftware. It explains key concepts within the Computer and Network Technology module and helps candidates prepare for their exams, including explainer videos, interactive questions and skills challenges aligned to the syllabus and with industry practice.
In this book, we will start to fill in some of the missing links in the chain. It is not intended to replace tuition and independent research, but instead to act as a basis upon which learners can build and extend their knowledge in order to tackle problems in this complex, digital world.
In chapter 1, we cover the basics in order to understand how data can be represented digitally. We look at the numbering systems that are used and build up an understanding of how the data can be worked with using Boolean algebra. We develop simple logic circuits and show how these circuits can be used to form more complex circuits such as registers used in computers and other devices.
In chapter 2, we investigate how computers can run programs using registers, for example to work with digital data and present it in human-readable formats. We explore how a system conducts many tasks at the same time.
In chapter 3, we show how computer systems have developed from the early mainframes to today’s tablets. We discuss how operating systems work with input and output devices, and how to evaluate the suitability and performance of computers. Finally, we look at the human interface.
In chapter 4, we look at different ways in which computers can be linked together to form networks in order to share data and provide services. We explore the hardware devices and software protocol stacks that are used in these networks to provide fast and efficient communications. We discuss some of the security risks and threats to connected devices and data transmitted over public networks. We identify how the cloud has become an important part of the IT landscape and look at some diverse ways that it can be used.
