Quantum Natural Language Processing (QNLP) is an emerging field where we hope to achieve significant advantages by using a quantum computer to process languages. This field is in a very nascent stage but still significant progress has been achieved to prove that QNLP concepts do work in practice when they are executed on real quantum hardware. The most beautiful aspect of QNLP is that it connects abstract mathematical concepts such as category theory (especially monoidal category) to real-world practical implementation. With the advent of large amounts of data, classical computers are gradually losing their processing power and as a consequence it takes a long time to process large chunks of data. Quantum computers bring a promise to handle large chunks of data such as text in an efficient manner.
This chapter introduces the concepts underlying QNLP and we tend to keep things very diagrammatic. The reason behind this is because QNLP itself is completely pictorial and the pictures have their own mathematical identity which we are not going to cover here but is a worthy point to note. Another aspect of QNLP is that it connects two different fields—categorical quantum mechanics and linguistics together to prove that QNLP is actually quantum-native, which means NLP should be performed on quantum computers not on classical.
