В конце 1967 года автору довелось вместе с товарищами Анатолием Черняевым и Игорем Рыбалкиным, работниками Центрального Комитета КПСС, совершить одну из тех примечательных поездок, какие случаются нечасто и помнятся затем долго: слетали в один из самых отдаленных от Москвы уголков земного шара — Чили, на съезд социалистической партии.
Путешествуя, по старой журналистской привычке щелкал фотоаппаратом и вел дневник. Так сложился этот рассказ о дальней своеобычной стране, о встречах с ее людьми. Как всегда в таких случаях, жалеешь, что встречи были слишком коротки, что не хватило ни времени, ни сил для того, чтобы зачерпнуть побольше впечатлений, приглядеться
к новой стране пристальнее, побродить по ее городам и селениям подольше.
