This edition is a English translation reprint of Asayama Ichiden Ryu Taijutsu Densho originally published in Japanese and now out-of-print. Asayama Ichiden Ryu is a well-established school that was founded in the 16th century by Asayama Ichidensai Shigetatsu and became one of the main ryu-ha of the Mito-han during the Edo era.
Later, this style would have a impact on modern arts as well… Takeda Sokaku apparently re-arranged the curriculumn of Daito Ryu during the Meiji era into a more comprehensive format based on Asayama Ichiden Ryu. Keishi Ryu, which was created by the Japanese Police School, adopted the technique maegoshi of Asayama Ichiden Ryu as one of their five basic techniques. Kano Jigoro, the founder of Judo, cited Asayama Ichiden Ryu in his earlier books as a significant and important jujutsu ryu-ha. Hatsumi Masaaki, the founder of the Bujinkan Dojo, received menkyo kaiden for Asayama Ichiden Ryu, and has subsequently incorporated into his curriculmn. Today, there are several branches of Asayama Ichiden Ryu that teach all or elements of kenjutsu, iaijutsu, taijutsu, jujutsu, bojutsu, kamajutsu, hojojutsu and shinobijutsu. The waza of this ryu-ha are organized into two main sections, depending on the branch, the Ten no Maki (kenjutsu) and Chi no Maki (taijutsu). This unique book covers all the techniques of the Chi no Maki as taught by Iwaki Hideo with step by step explanations and over 450 illustrations which are easy to follow covering 120 traditional jujutsu techniques including suwariwaza and mutodori.
