Throughout history the sword has been a valuable weapon for combat and survival. In our modern society the sword continues to be a great tool for developing the mind and body and enhancing martial arts skills. In Sword Skills, twenty core blade movements are presented along with their fighting applications. The movements are demonstrated with hundreds of photographs showing both one and two-handed versions of the techniques. Once learned, these core movements can then be combined into endless combinations of attack and defense. The book also covers ways to build upon the movements through methods such as double swords, sword and dagger, and blunt weapons training. Numerous cutting patterns are also explored to help the sword fighter expand their skills. If you are a beginner, or a seasoned practitioner, Sword Skills will enhance your abilities with the blade.
Most of the major differences between the sword arts are a result of adaptations that have been made due to the size and weight of the weapon or the type of clothing and protective armor worn by the practitioners. The true key to proficiency with the sword is knowledge and understanding of the basic underlying principles of bladed combat. Once these principles are understood, they can be effectively applied regardless of the type of weapon, or the style that is being used.
In the more than four decades that I have studied martial arts I have found that certain movements and patterns with the sword are universal and can be applied equally to any type of weapon. These same movements and principles can easily be adapted from a short one-handed sword to a long two-handed blade with only slight modifications by the practitioner.
